Friday’s racing was cancelled – the cliche ‘dogs off chains’ would have been no exaggeration with reported gusts of plus 30 knots ripping through the Gulf of St Tropez accompanied by some of nature’s best with a fantastic lightning display and a torrential downpour – all fleets remained securely tied to the dock and all crews enjoying a second ‘lay day’. Saturday dawned fairly bright and clear, as the boats left the dock it wasn’t 100 percent sure that they would even get a race in, the front had left a ‘hole’ and it was hard to predict when the More...

The Js are having a fantastic regatta here in the bay of St Tropez, the competition between Velsheda, Hanuman and Lionheart has never been tighter. Unusually the Js completed two races today, a very short windward leeward followed by a coastal course finishing in front of the city walls – a delight for the throngs of spectators lining the remparts. Conditions were rated as medium for the first race, seeing 11-12 knots of wind rising to just over 16 knots during the second race. “It was a tough day on the water,” summed up Victor Weerens racing aboard Lionheart, “the More...

The Js got a start at 1310 after the breeze had filled in a little, it was to be a two lap windward leeward course again off Pampelone beach. “It was all about the first beat, and we got them!” explained More...

A sunny start to Les Voiles de St Tropez and a warm welcome to Shamrock V, Hanuman, Velsheda and Lionheart, this weeks contenders for the fourth and final head to head for 2013. Rainbow is not part of the lineup due to her participation in the Monaco Yacht Show and the small logistical challenge to go from Show mode to Race mode in a day. Nor will we see the mighty Ranger. Velsheda will be keen to continue her success from the Rolex Maxis in Porto Cervo but with Hanuman back in the mix, this week’s Rolex prize is fair More...

Day 5: A Convincing Win and the Rolex Cup for Velsheda

Today saw the grand finale of the battle of the J’s at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, with Rainbow ahead of Velsheda by only one point on this last day of racing, tensions were high. “We (Rainbow) came to this regatta with one goal, and that was not to finish last – we’ve done that, and better – to be in the running to actually win the Class really was a dream come true. ”. Tensions were further heightened when the Race Committee called a half hour postponement at 9am, and it was looking dicey as to whether there would More...
